CHALLENGE OF THE BRAVE

 A few weeks ago, I received an unexpected message from one of my students, with whom I had not had contact on academic matters for a few years. In that message he told me: ¨I have seen this video and I have remembered you professor and the insistence on these teachings¨ I opened the source of it and after seeing it, I realized that it was an excerpt from the film ¨challenge of brave ¨. This movie is more than that, because of the background it has. The extract that the student sent described the scene of a man, whom we will call Oscar, who had been out of work for a long time, and who after having gone through very complex situations with his family, finally had the option of entering work in a factory. The entry as an operator, but his performance as well as his values, had caught the attention of the production manager and the head of human resources. In the industry, they were needing a new supervisor and for this vacancy they summoned several operators who had already worked for a long time, and as a last option they chose Oscar.

Each of the candidates had to pass a single test, and it was Oscar's turn. They summoned him, unknowingly and surprisingly, to the office of the head of human resources, where the head of production was also, and told him: Oscar, we have an offer for you, something simple, and if you do it right, your income and position, can improve. They explained the details that, in summary, told him that he would receive 9 packages of a specific product in the warehouse, but that it was necessary for him to declare that he had received 10, since internally and not to worry about the latter, because it was a matter internal company. They sent him to think about it and give them his answer the next day. That day Oscar could not sleep, he conversed with his wife, he began to analyze the situation and definitely for him, everything was clear, his ethics told him that he had to do the right thing and record only what he had received, however the pressure to not losing his job, which was the sustenance of his family and for which he waited a long time, also weighed. Finally and once he made his decision together with his wife, he left for work. The bosses were waiting for him in the office. He arrived and entered, sat down and waited, likewise the head of human resources sat in front of him and said: Oscar, be ready to do the simple work that we have asked you? And Oscar replied: No Sir, I cannot do something that goes against my principles, if 9 products enter, I will declare the 9 products, and inside the poor man was sweating, because he did not want to lose his job, but the strength of his value as a person and professional had a weight older in its beginnings. The two bosses looked at each other and the head of human resources, I stared at Oscar, smiled and said: Oscar, we want to congratulate you on your integrity, it was the last option on our list, but everyone else did not respond as they should, let's go. to be promoted to supervisor and we will improve your income, thank you for your values and we will notify the personnel in charge. The man rushed out of the office and called his wife to tell her what had happened, they both cried and thanked God.

This description of this episode, it is likely that many of you find it very close, how many times have we been through one of these situations? Or how many times have we seen others go through this? Day by day, we are exposed to this, and I say exposed, because what should be simple, normal and part of the person, is to respond with absolute naturalness, to questions or situations like these. When we see that something is wrong, and that it goes against our principles, simply, and without analyzing it much, you should answer the right thing. However, this is not part of a common denominator, on the contrary, what most happens is that value and dignity are left as ornaments, and respond as the current takes us, no matter what, and to get the most out of it. profit or benefit. This saying NO, this standing firm in the principles, is in our societies, especially in Latin America, a CHALLENGE OF THE COURAGEOUS. Many people cling so tightly to a position, or an established power, that they don't care how they get there or stay there, and they cling so much to the left side of righteousness, that when they have lost the office or the title, they simply They have lost everything, because they valued themselves from there. The fight is tough, but the challenge is not to arrive and be a successful man or woman, the challenge is to reach that success, with integrity, the rest, as it came, will go, because it was not built on rock. We create value and strive to be better every day. Let's be brave!
